Except for the super-wide pavement scorching tires, this metaphor for automotive bravado closely resembles a futuristic spacecraft. In place of rocket thrusters is the ultra-resonant, more-than-adequate, mid-mounted, 5.7-liter V12 powerplant. Unless you're safety-harnessed behind the wheel of Craig Breedlove's Spirit of America land speed record car or the ultra-exotic Ferrari F50, you've got less...less than its 492 Italian ponies. What's more, the Diablo costs less -- only a quarter of a million dollars -- half of what an F50 will run you. | 1996 Lamborghini Diablo
1999 Ferrari 550 |
Debuting in 1997, the 550 Maranello is the newest addition to the Ferrari line-up, replacing the 512 Testarossa. This car pays homage to the racing lines of older Ferraris and marks a return to a front engine configuration on a performance "berlinetta". The appearance of the 550 Maranello is completely modern with styling cues that hark back to the highly acclaimed 250 GTO and Daytona coupe of the early 1970s. As with all Ferrari's, bodywork is by Pininfarina, a design house in Turin, Italy. The demographic background on a typical Ferrari owner is quite clear - they are overwhelmingly male with a bankroll large enough to choke a Prancing Horse. So, what does it cost to join this exclusive fraternity? A Ferrari 550 Maranello can be obtained with a mere $196,000. go to index go to my hobbies
